NEW VECTORS GIVES AWARDS TO
DANIEL LISBOA AND ALI CHERRI

The parody “O Fim do Homem Cordial”, by producer Daniel Lisboa, which sparked a lot of controversy by transposing kidnappings of Western citizens by Middle Eastern extremist groups into the present-day reality of Bahia (and of Brazil), is the winner of the New Vectors Award, granted by the jury of the 15th Videobrasil International Electronic Art Festival. The FAAP Digital Arts Award was won by “Un Cercle Autour du Soleil”, a disturbing Lebanese production directed by Ali Cherri. In Beirut, a city devastated by a 15-year long civil war, a citizen talks about the hardships of living in the Lebanon’s capital city, which was rebuilt after the conflict. The Festival curator and director, Solange Oliveira Farkas, has claimed that “Um Cercle Autour du Soleil” is “a debut work that stands out due to its aesthetic and political articulation.” “While composing a personal narrative, the author presents a peculiar take on the Lebanese civil war."

In their statement, the members of the jury – Marcos Moraes, coordinator of the Plastic Arts Course at FAAP (Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado), Mexican artist Ximena Cuevas, and Argentine-Israeli curator Sergio Edelsztein – have praised Lisboa’s work “for its ironic commentary on current policies, its use of mass media, and its projection of local social, political, and economic values and issues into an universal context.”

The jury has also granted two Honorable Mentions: one to “02. Conjunto Residencial” (by the São Paulo-based duo Adams Teixeira de Carvalho and Olivia Brenga Marques), an innovative animation film in which a person who lives in a residential building jumps off a diving board on the seventh floor, attracting the attention of the neighbors, who take turns to experience the sensation; and another to “Paralisis” (a Peru/Mexico co-production directed by Gabriel Acevedo Velarde), featuring sidewalk bushes that scream, tremble, and moan, stressed out by the stream of pedestrians in a metropolis, as if they were soaking in their misery.
